We need opposite views. Can help create insightful dialogue for both sides. Challenges to a perspective can help refine ideas. Unless he is making blatantly false or harmful claims, he may be annoying but not problematic.

His views get circulated by some outlets as if he’s an expert on COVID, which means that when he’s wrong (which happens more and more every day now) he’s dangerously wrong. His latest takes on COVID are dangerous, he’s claiming that once you have been vaccinated you can 1/2

ditch masking in public. When we 1) don’t know how effective in reducing the likelihood of infection and transmissibility the vaccine is 2) know not everyone is going to get vaccinated too and 3) seriously undermines the ongoing efforts to increase/maintain mask compliance 2/X

And social distancing measures amongst the general public. Something that in a finicky public that apparently really doesn’t like wearing masks is even harder to do the more people out there are saying “it’s fine I don’t need to wear a mask, I’m immune”.

I still don’t see inherent ‘danger’ in discussing this idea. He is not lying. I mean more arguments can be made on both sides. Like, since it seems that masking and social distancing is reducing the flu burden, should we do this forever?

Or, at what point does the psychological costs of masking and social distancing override the costs of reducing illness? Does being vaccinated create pressure that may select for mutant stains? He is making an argument. Argue back. Bring in new evidence or holes in the evidence.

I am uninterested in his views. It’s just reflexive contrarianism. He has done so many things that have convinced me he’s just a fundamentally unserious person, and life is too short for such nonsense. But his greatest sin is simple - he can not admit error.

Yep. One thing I learned at M&M as a resident is that it world go far easier for me if I just admitted up front when I screwed up. Trying to justify a screw up was the best way to guarantee I’d get raked over the coals by the harshest attendings.
