Discussions on @Nextdoor remind me that the average person doesn't think it's up to them to back up their claims. If you ask for a source for a claim, they'll frequently say, "Do your own work" or give you a vague reply (like the @MichiganHHS website) without a specific link.

My favorite is “do your research.” Then if you come back with sources and cites they say “oh, that’s from the media. You can’t trust that.”

It's almost as if they've spent their lives being told how very special they are.

This might be the thing that pisses me off the most. They make an outrageous claim, provide no evidence or source, and when asked they tell you to look it up yourself. Drives me absolutely nuts. The onus is on them to backup their claims but they don’t seem to understand that.

Don't forget that by devoting one's self to decades of study, we're suddenly "Indoctrinated," or "shills" for... "Big Pharma / Health Insurance (ew) / Illuminati / Lizard People." Again, I'm STILL waiting on that Big Pharma cheque!

I think understanding the scientific construction of evidence is a key part of scientific literacy, and we know that's lacking in general.
