An editor once told me to respond to every such message with "Thank you for reading, and thank you for taking the time to write!" That's it. Nothing more. Which turned out to be great advice.

I get that advice so the time, but I ignore it a lot. What can I say? I’ve also been known to screenshot emails and post them to Twitter.
