This is, sadly, true. We’re also the only industry left that still widely uses pagers.https://twitter.com/AlanLevinovitz/status/1349126226774994944 …

Lots of takeaways from an interview I just did with a gastroenterologist. One of them—should I have known this?—is that faxes (!!!) are still a primary way that physicians send and receive information. "the only industry left that does it"

The pager I carry 24/7 (shown next to my Apple Watch for size comparison) is basically the same as the one I carried over 20 years ago. Same size, same design. I expect to be carrying it until the day I retire. That’s how far behind the technological times medicine is here.pic.twitter.com/xqsc8yI5JS

How many docs out there, I wonder, still carry this pager or one with the same design?

They still have technical advantages in some situations.

Yes, I wonder if the simplicity could be argued as an advantage as well. A dedicated device that just does one thing.

Right, it also reduces cognitive load (from a UI point of view).

That makes sense to me. I like a lot of dedicated equipment in my life, I find there is a point at which electronics try to do too much and their effectiveness drops for me. Literally have a web design meeting today, thanks for this link lol.

I hate that it's one more thing to carry. I might not mind so much if this extra dedicated device weren't so BIG. It sticks way out on my belt and is always catching on things. I have to get slightly larger suit jackets because it makes a bulge and rubs against the jacket.

That makes sense. Yeah, I imagine it could be slimmed down. They are probably just using tooling where the molds were made in 1989 lol. At my old job we had products like that, we're the only ones making it and no reason to invest in new development.

It's also not as though the technology hasn't existed for a long time to make them smaller. Hell, I carried smaller pagers over 25 years ago as a resident.
