This is, sadly, true. We’re also the only industry left that still widely uses pagers.https://twitter.com/AlanLevinovitz/status/1349126226774994944 …

Lots of takeaways from an interview I just did with a gastroenterologist. One of them—should I have known this?—is that faxes (!!!) are still a primary way that physicians send and receive information. "the only industry left that does it"

The pager I carry 24/7 (shown next to my Apple Watch for size comparison) is basically the same as the one I carried over 20 years ago. Same size, same design. I expect to be carrying it until the day I retire. That’s how far behind the technological times medicine is here.pic.twitter.com/xqsc8yI5JS

How many docs out there, I wonder, still carry this pager or one with the same design?

Whats the actual technological wall that medical field is hitting? Like does the pager recieve signals where others don't or something logical?

I was wondering if there was a legal reason, i.e. possible interception of patient confidential info, that a pager or fax might preserve but a text message or e-mail would not. (I know some e-mail can now be sent encrypted, but it's a hassle.)

The pager network is more reliable & has fewer dead zones. Couple hours outside of NYC there are dead zones on the major highway (not in the so-called wilderness). Satphone or pager can be a literal lifesaver. As with land lines in a blackout, not 1st choice but a backstop.

there was a ransomware attack on the NHS a few years ago that locked lots of computers. the only reason it didnt destroy the network is most systems were so old the virus hadnt been written to notice them!

I believe one of the advantages of a pager is that it does not transmit, only receives, which is a safety feature in an operating room or other area with sensitive electronic equipment.
