It's always worth emphasizing: Science deniers ALWAYS need a conspiracy theory to explain why science rejects their preferred “alternative” ideas. Science denial is thus ALWAYS rooted in conspiracy theories. Always.
The scientific use of the word “theory” is not the only use of the word. In fact, the scientific use of the word is by far not the most common use of the word, which is why creationists get away with the “just a theory” gambit.

Conspiracy hypothesis does not have the same ring but I think we should find another term for conspiracy “theories” or people will not learn the real meaning.

I'm assuming you guys have all seen Kirby Ferguson's YouTube videos on the topic? He doesn't address the propriety of the term "theories," but he does a brilliant job logically decimating their credibility in principle.
