Whenever I see “anti-woke liberal” in a person’s social media bio, I read: Jerk. And anything but liberal. These are the people who claim that abuse from the woke “radicalized” them. It’s BS. They were always like this, and negative interactions with the “woke” are just an excuse

Well my thread yesterday is trashed due to various shady deletions (covering of tracks) but reading a history of the word is a good first step to seeing how anti-wokeness (and anti-PC) before it, are really very effective racist messaging campaigns.https://www.vox.com/culture/21437879/stay-woke-wokeness-history-origin-evolution-controversy …

Right. But my point remains, the right uses this tactic because it's effective. It's only effective because liberals are image-obsessed snobs who hate that caricature being applied to them. The SECOND we stop caring, it stops working. So why do we still care?

I don’t think the right cares about seeing itself as villainous but liberals do. Mitch McConnel calls himself the Grim Reaper. They vote for a guy who mocks the disabled. I think liberals care about image because they think goodness is important.

I mean, in my life I remember being a little little kid, and seeing Reagan call Mondale, sneeringly, “a liberal.” That was it. That was the insult. And his response “no I’m not! No I’m not!” At least I think so, maybe I dreamed it. It was 36 years ago. But you my point.

Yep. This is nothing new, either. Somehow, "liberal" long ago became an epithet, an insult, and all too often liberals tacitly buy into that framing by denying they are liberal when they're called liberal by right wingers.

Few words in the English language have been applied more liberally. During at least some periods, conservatives probably meant it as a denigration of things they sometimes claim not to have opposed.

They have done the same thing to the term “socialism”. Make it sound bad enough, and soon enough even those that actually are liberal/socialist/[insert epithet here] will believe it too.

Yet they are proud to be called conservative; go figure. I always thought I was fairly conservative until this year when I found out having empathy and compassion apparently makes one a liberal. So be it. Better than conservative as that is now linked with Trumpism.

From what I recall, the demeaning of “liberal” kicked into high gear with the ascent of Reagan. Seemed like most Dems fled from the term rather than defend it.
