America suffers from a lack of access to legitimate public intellectuals who have relevant credentials, actual standing in scientific societies and merit. This is a choice. The press keeps going for spectacle rather than cultivating trusted relationships with legitimate sources.
I get a bit worried about the concept of a public intellectual. You do have rare polymaths but I worry about people opining outside their expertise
Real intellectuals will acknowledge their deficits and defer to specialists. It should be clear from fools like Pinker, or Taleb, etc., that insist on opining on everything, that opining on everything is just showing your ass.
