In other words, I understand that it's hard to admit that something with which you've intertwined your identity is going off the rails. You don't want to believe it. So you ignore it, swallow your misgivings, and deny it. This process can go on a long time.

Perhaps the one good thing about
@realDonaldTrump being elected President was that it made it impossible for some of the more rational Republicans to deny or ignore what had been happening to their party for the last several decades. Too bad the price was so high. - Show replies

I’m 62. My first memory of being bewildered was in 1980...Jerry Falwell and his claim of there being a moral majority...that is white and evangelical were the only moral citizens. Seems tame by today’s standards but it was stunning at the time.

I used to hate to admit it, but 1980 was the first election I was old enough to vote, and I voted for Ronald Reagan. Although I never formally joined
@GOP, I voted Republican for the next 22 years before finally making the break. My "WTF?" moment was Pat Buchanan's RNC speech.
