The Nirvana fallacy is a key feature of science denial in medicine. Antivaxxers, for instance, frequently believe that if a vaccine isn’t 100% effective it’s worthless crap. Cancer quacks use the fact that cancer treatments aren’t 100% effective and 100% safe to demonize them.https://twitter.com/JTMontgomery8/status/1337264662191063040 …

Some people don't understand probabilities. They can only be convinced that something works if it works 100% of the time.

This also crosses over with the fallacy of the single cause. "There should be *one* thing that solves *all* the problems *all* of the time, and if this one thing does not solve them, it's not good enough and shouldn't be used at all."

And their quackery in general is based on the same principle. "There's ONE (frequently changing) thing that causes ALL humanity's health problems ALL the time, and we have ONE (frequently changing) thing that combats it"

And why quite smoking? My uncle died of lung cancer and he never smoked. My other uncle smoked like a chimney and like to 88 years old with no cancer.

Nirvana was a perfect band, mate. Kurt Cobain was a brilliant lyricist and they had Dave fucking Grohl on drums.

It seems linked with the Availability Heuristic. A plane landing isn’t noteworthy. But if just 1 of a billion crashes, it’ll be seared in our minds. Similarly, someone getting vaccinated and then going about life isn’t interesting. A few negative responses—the sky is falling!

Lay people without statistics training do not understand probabilities. Especially how they apply on an individual level versus a population level. Individually observable outcomes are binary, you don't see a 20% pop increase risk of death, a person died or didn't.

Hell, the probability that I take a breath is a 50-50 chance. This crap is why we need to begin teaching critical thinking skills at pre-K.

Yeah, and heaven forbid we should find out new stuff, and have to change treatments or advice. Scientists are pretty much the only people who actually say, "we have new information and we now know better..." Politicians should try this!
