This is an important thread. However, one does need to distinguish between the vaccine-hesitant, who can be reached, and antivaxxers, who almost certainly cannot because they have internalized their antivaccine conspiracy theory beliefs as part of their identity, like religion.https://twitter.com/mariasundaram/status/1336018501723697153 …

In brief, it's a waste of time in the vast majority of instances to try to change the mind of a hardcore antivaxxer. You can only try to inoculate those susceptible to antivaccine messages with the tools to recognize the conspiracy theories, bad arguments, and pseudoscience.

That's also not to say that the vaccine-averse can't be reached. The point is that hardcore antivaxxers can't, except rarely and with incredible effort. Usually, if an antivaxxer changes their mind, it's something internal or in response to something that's happened.

That family in Oregon still refused to vaccinate their kids after one was hospitalized with tetanus, I believe.

Providence wouldn’t release him until he had a pediatrician. Enter Dr. Paul Thomas/a hall pass. Suspending his medical license was a step in the right direction for vaccine “hesitant” parents/humanity. Can’t change the hardcore, but you can take away their hall pass.

Hard core activist antivaxxers are entirely beyond hope and should be stigmatized and ignored. The hesitant are generally redeemable in my opinion, as someone who had questions.

I'm interested in the vaccine-averse-and-antivaxx-adjacent subset. Meaning: people whose *partners* are longtime antivaxx but who are not themselves totally converted. That's a promising sign in my experience. Merely anecdotal of course.

You can make an antivaxxer doubt by attempting to convert them as they were converted: suggest their info planted in western medical journals by Chinese intelligence in a campaign to destabilize the US via an unhealthy populace. They’ll deny it, but it’ll stay in their mind.

The anti-vax mindset is an entitlement of first world privilege. Ironically, I'd bet my last dollar that 99% of anti-vaxxers have been vaccinated. They just need to lose an unvaccinated child to break through protective force field of ignorance that blinds them from reality 🤔

Thanks for RT'ing! I did talk about this a little in my thread--some of these conversations won't go much of anywhere--& I encourage those finding themselves in that situation to step away with patience/kindness. It can do a lot of good, even for those just listening/watching.
