@gorskon @dfreedman7 @RyanMarino @NicoleB_MD @jonathanstea @ENirenberg Real talk. I have a vaccine-hesitant friend, his mother passed away from influenza despite being vaccinated. Wife's health improved after she "stopped listening to docs". How do I effectively talk to him?

Is this hesitancy in relation to a specific vaccine or generally?

I'd say in general. They just had a child, wife is now posting common anti-vaccine posts & has "found" essential oils. He and I have butted heads about other vaccines too He frequently brings up this case with his mom though and I think that what really fueled his distrust

I can understand his pain from losing his mom. Maybe a comparison to seatbelts? Seatbelts reduce the risk of death by about 50% in a crash; your loved one may still die with one, but it’s still the safer thing?

Also, as all trauma surgeons know there is even a small risk of injury from the seatbelt itself, even occasionally serious injuries (such as small bowel injuries). Even so, on balance, if you're in a crash it is FAR safer to be wearing a seatbelt than not to be wearing one.

This is why seatbelts are dangerous. Everyone knows that by not wearing a seatbelt during an MVC, a vehicle occupant will be thrown clear into a soft cushion comprised of lifesaving MyPillows.

also - if empathetic to others: the trauma to bystanders of seeing you catapulted through the window and bleeding out is horrid.

(that’s the sole logical argument against suicide, right? you don’t do it because in doing so, you inflict harm on others?)
