I was looking for a category of bias that might match this, and I realized its more than that. Its the defense mechanism Denial. People hate being forced to change, and this is how their brain allows them to not have to. I suddenly wonder if more empathy would help.

I remember how at the beginning of the pandemic, they were writing it off because the 1919 flu epidemic had killed more. I would say "So far," that is. Funny how they dropped that argument. Now they resort to ageism.
