Why are there so many horrible people with horrible judgment in health care? I've seen nurses, doctors, etc. saying stuff like this and posting dumb stuff on social media who are then amazed when it gets them in trouble with their bosses.https://www.wonkette.com/ashley-grames-nurse-oregon-covid …

Doctors are tougher to explain because they have full under grads and presumably should be able to read the literature. Many nurses, particularly LPN’s are trained vocationally mostly. Outside of nursing specific training, they may only have bio 101 and anatomy 101, if that.

My experience is that some nurses really don't get science. Good at connecting with patients but once you get into MOA and other theoretical information you get the glazed eyes.

Actually, the same is true for a lot of physicians. I frequently point out that the vast majority of physicians, although they have an education in science, are not actually scientists. I liken medicine to engineering, in other words, an applied science, but not a science.

Basically, most physicians are not scientists, nor do they need to be. They just need to know how to apply science and science-based guidelines to the care of their patients.

I’d disagree w that tbh. It hurts patients a ton when docs say things like: all your tests are negative, it must be psychosomatic because there’s no “organic” cause. A scientist would recognize the limitations of tests themselves & not claim omniscience.

My fave recent absurd encounter was cardio saying “we (the scientific community) don’t know what causes x benign symptom you have but in your case it’s probably anxiety” Me: 🤦🏽‍♀️ that’s not how science works. You should’ve stopped at we don’t know.

I disagree. Unless you understand the science behind the treatments and how the guidelines were formulated, you are not a professional, but a glorified technician. It's hard to be a patient advocate, and to advocate for treatments unless you understand them. 1/2

The lack of understanding is why there is such lukewarm adherence to guidelines. Like wearing masks, for example.
