David Gorski, MD, PhD Retweeted Galileo's Mum  🙂

Of course, errors in collection samples (such as not getting far enough back in the nasopharynx or swabbing for long enough) and handling are *far* more likely to result in false negatives, *not* false positives. As for nosocomial infections, WTF? She's grasping at straws.https://twitter.com/GalileoMum/status/1333215340302635010 …

He's making a huge assumption that all of the sample collection and PCR testing is being done by highly trained and experienced technicians, which it is not, due to the very rapid increase in the volume of testing. He also ignores the possibility of nosocomial infections.

Maybe she thinks the untrained technicians lick the swabs before using them?

There's a reason for the internal control assays and synthetic positive & negative controls. We don't assume expert technicians are running the tests when we design them, and some of the POC tests are designed to be run by unskilled personnel.

How do you get nosocomial infections without being hospitalized? On admission? Seriously, people should stay in their own lanes.

I can't even think of the chain of logic where nosocomial infections would lead to a higher false positive rate? She's contradicting her own argument, hospital tests are literally conducted by "highly trained and experienced technicians" which should lower FP rates.
