Similarly, medicine was much more primitive, with no ventilators/ICU/etc., meaning that the death rate would’ve been a lot higher.

I was thinking about this the other day: antibiotic casettes were some of the first selectable markers to be packaged in transposons. Without antibiotics, most of modern molecular biology would have been impossible, or at least significantly slower.
