I would argue that that’s exactly the way we should speak to THIS President.https://twitter.com/atrupar/status/1332100157501018113 …

Thank non-denominational deity that he will not be president much longer.

True, but he can do a lot of damage in the less than two months that he has left, alas.

What’s the reason again for having such a long transition period anyways? Didn’t it used to be shorter many many years ago?

No, it was originally much longer. Inauguration Day was mandated by the Constitution to be March 4, until the 20th Amendment moved it to January 20. Inauguration Day 1937 was the first time it occurred in January.

Ah, okay I gotcha. I dunno, I’m thinking it may be worth a conversation discussing the potential merits of shortening the time frame from finalized election results to Inauguration Day even further. 😬

That would require a Constitutional Amendment, given that January 20 was fixed as Inauguration Day by the 20th Amendment.

As for the reason for long transition periods, one could understand a four-month transition period in colonial times and throughout the 1800s, given communication and transportation issues. A two-and-a-half month transition period made sense in the 20th century. Now? Not so much.

^Yes exactly. The pace at with department head changes, executive order and judicial appointments are being proposed, made and executed makes this long transition period seem quaint. It also evidently enables possible sabotage of the incoming administration. 😬

The thing is, before Trump, there were norms. Yes, outgoing administrations sometimes did some minor sabotage, such as a flurry of executive orders, but most outgoing Presidents were fairly deferential to the incoming President.
