As for the reason for long transition periods, one could understand a four-month transition period in colonial times and throughout the 1800s, given communication and transportation issues. A two-and-a-half month transition period made sense in the 20th century. Now? Not so much.

^Yes exactly. The pace at with department head changes, executive order and judicial appointments are being proposed, made and executed makes this long transition period seem quaint. It also evidently enables possible sabotage of the incoming administration.
