Interviewing medical students for residency positions in our program both exhilarates and depresses me. On the one hand, these students are really impressive (publications, lots of volunteer work, sometimes overseas). They'll be excellent residents and, ultimately, surgeons. 1/

Bottom line: Screw my comparing myself then to medical students now. The times were different. In any event, the kids are alright in medicine today (and getting better). May it continue to be so! 3/3

It gets more and more competitive each year. Always have to find a way to stand apart. That being said, we are constantly reminded by faculty and admins how important research and publications are. I'm sure you would have had just as many, if you had been similarly encouraged.
