When Republicans embrace fascist ideas, as they have been doing, I’m going to call it fascism. Not doing so is intellectually dishonest and, again, is exactly what they want.

What you’re doing now is what was said about racists elsewhere in this thread. They want to define racism as only its most blatant, white sheet wearing manifestations and not apply the word to less blatant forms. I reject that utterly.

I’m not saying you’re a fascist or racist, obviously. But you’re playing into how racists and fascists want the terms used, only to describe the most blatant, obvious forms.

I refuse to concede the language to them, as it only helps normalize them.

No worries, I know you're not calling me that. I just disagree about the language thing, in two ways. First, I *do* think these terms are being used too liberally, and that creates unnecessary political problems that get in the way of good policy—which is the top priority.

Second, I think there's a way that calling people out has come to be more important than effecting change (maybe because people are too confident that the former leads to the latter).
@TheBTI@atrembath@TedNordhaus taught me this when it comes to climate change and conservation.1 reply 0 retweets 3 likes -

If you think climate change is urgent, it's not wise to sling around "science denier". Better to sit down w/people, figure out where they stand on specific issues and why, and then work towards a solution. (This is how Yellowstone in conservative Montana got wolves).

See also "anti-vaxxer" a term I used to use and now vehemently object to, thanks to sociologists and others who have convinced me that if what I really want is more people getting vaccinated, that's not a good approach. Is it "what *they* want"? Am I conceding language? Eh.

Now you’ve completely lost me. There are real antivaxxers out there: Del Bigtree, RFK Jr., etc. , whom we distinguished from vaccine-averse or vaccine-hesitant, and they try their damnedest to avoid the label because they know it’s toxic. I won’t let them.

It’s a distinct and intentional TACTIC of leaders of the antivaccine movement and hard core antivaxxers to deny they are antivax. It’s a tactic designed to obfuscate.

In fact, I have a whole series on how antivaxxers deny they are antivax while they also compare vaccine mandates to Nazi-ism and vaccination to rape. It’s up to 20-something installments.
