“What I see is people rejecting reality, and opting more for a reality show...And that to me is frightening.” Where have most scientists been? Science denialist disinformation works, and too many ivory tower scientists look down on #scicomm.https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-03120-8 …

Speculation. Many scientists and physicians have a hard time coping with the idea that presenting scientific facts alone is not effective for many people. Add the frustration when their credentials don't bring instant credibility. Leads to apathy and a "why waste my time" att.

Could be. Because science tends to value information and evidence, scientists (and most physicians) assume that's the way that most people think and that evidence, rather than emotion and identity, are what persuades people.

Exactly. It's hard to get past the fact that most people don't think like scientists. I get it that #scicomm is not for every scientist. But, that doesn't excuse denigrating those that work hard at it.

Everyone BELIEVES that they, personally, value info and evidence and other people value emotion/identity. I'm not even sure scientists are less likely to value evidence over emotion, in fields not their own. I'm not even sure there's a strict binary.

There's nothing wrong with emotions, anyway. Evidence without emotional reaction is dead.

I used to work in Comms, and decided that the last thing you want to do is give a mic to a scientist or engineer. They are useless comms-wise. Some are good, and get it, but most of them just don't.

I'm a scientist that has done a lot of comms, and have also trained others. The key is careful evaluation and training. You don't just hand them a mic or put them on a call--or anyone for that matter. Even comms professionals vary in their acumen for live interview.

Agreed. But the other issue is that many public-facing scientists use mockery and disdain (including you) from an elitist and sometimes even authoritarian perspective. Bashing someone's character is not going to elicit dialogue, just more confrontation.
