“What I see is people rejecting reality, and opting more for a reality show...And that to me is frightening.” Where have most scientists been? Science denialist disinformation works, and too many ivory tower scientists look down on #scicomm.https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-03120-8 …

I mean, seriously. The disdain so many physicians and scientists exhibit for #scicomm dates back to Carl Sagan and before. It's probably not as bad as it was then, but the sorts of stuff I see from my colleagues in my Twitter feed depress me on this front.

The height of science is *not* debunking obviously nonsense ideas with meticulous, rigorous methods at great cost of time and resources.

but it's not just the right. The left is busy pretending that human sex isn't binary and immutable. Empirical reality about 2 gametes and sex being coded into every nucleated cell in our body is no longer accepted as fact

The populists do have a point. Too many people look down on them. Its as though the ‘elites’ (which is a function of class and power) which includes scientists and doctors. Just don’t really care about them.

Speculation. Many scientists and physicians have a hard time coping with the idea that presenting scientific facts alone is not effective for many people. Add the frustration when their credentials don't bring instant credibility. Leads to apathy and a "why waste my time" att.

Could be. Because science tends to value information and evidence, scientists (and most physicians) assume that's the way that most people think and that evidence, rather than emotion and identity, are what persuades people.

I don't think the problem lies on the side of scientists/scicomm more than it lies on the disinformation chambers in social media (FB). I don't think scicommers are in touch, at all, with this phenomenon.

“For some researchers, the fact that the election has come down to the wire is evidence that scientists simply aren’t connecting with the general population. “ OK but can scientists deliver the info? Maybe the media has to consistently carry the science message to the public.
