Yep, just as I can’t think of anything more ivory tower than dismissing debunking quackery because the quackery is so “obvious” to the academic it’s nonsense. In the #COVID19 pandemic, this arrogance is even worse, as it has the potential to lead to way more deaths than quackery.https://twitter.com/dfreedman7/status/1322349785840496640 …

I cannot think of anything more ivory tower than academics looking down on a journal for debunking misinformation about the pandemic that we are in right now.

I've been saying for some time that academics (and news agencies and others) need to respond much more 'aggressively' to fake news and to the deliberate misuse of their work. Being right is of no use if you are drowned out by the wrong.https://twitter.com/doublehelix/status/1186219034108465152 …

I wish more places would add the the "this article is old" banner like the Guardian... But then I complained to Reuters that one of their articles was being misused by trolls, and they did absolutely nothing, not even linking to their own follow-up article, as I suggested...

Potential misuse of titles and abstracts also needs thought during peer-review. Publishers may even need to add updates or prominent warnings if a paper starts being prominently misquoted or misrepresented.
