This is a truly cringe-inducing take that blames the wrong people. It's not doctors doing studies like this that are political or that contribute to its politicization. It's politicians like our President, which lead doctors to feel obligated to do studies like this.

I mean, what planet does this doctor live on? YES! Many thousands of people really do believe masks are hazardous. Some of them are even our fellow physicians. I know. I've encountered them online and in person.https://twitter.com/drjohnm/status/1322284518573789185?s=20 …

Well, I should have qualified that statement a bit. But my point stands: 1 No one w/ any sense believes masks impair pulmonary physiology 2 It’s wasteful research w opportunity costs 3 Its flawed, and deniers will use that 4 You don’t need empirical evidence for masks

You really do need to get out more. In order: 1. Simply untrue. People with sense in other areas really do come to believe masks are dangerous because they don't have a background adequate to dismiss the disinformation. 2. Maybe, but a study like this is relatively low cost 1/

3. So are all studies in one way or the other. Denialists can ALWAYS find flaws, no matter how good the study. That alone is not a reason not to do them. 2/

4. This is arguable at best, unjustified at worst. I frequently argue that homeopathy should be dismissible on basic science alone, but thanks to methodolatry (the obscene worship of the RCT as the only valid means of clinical investigation), RCTs end up being needed.

It must be nice to be oblivious to all the disinformation that's going on and to be able just to dismiss it as not something anyone with sense would believe.
