I knew vascular surgeons who smoked. They’d spend their days doing vascular bypasses on people whose smoking had clogged their arteries, seeing the consequences of smoking on a daily basis, but still they smoked.https://twitter.com/c0nc0rdance/status/1320191154185510913 …

I worked in a transplant immunology lab at a major Texas hospital in the 90's. It was not uncommon to see a group of surgeons or surg techs smoking outside in dirty scrubs, leaning against the "no smoking this area" sign. Nicotine is a hell of a drug. pic.twitter.com/AzkiIVtCHj

Yup. I worked for a thoracic oncologist who had a pack & a half a day habit. He’d change lab coats 3x a day & pop Listerine strips thinking it would remove the smell of the cigarette. His patients were devoted to him.

I’m an old time radio aficionado and listen to Radio Classics on Sirius XM. I’ve also listened to every episode of Dragnet with commercials. I’ve heard many of those ads. Particularly jarring are the ones that cite obviously crappy studies by the tobacco companies.

In the mid-80s I was working with one of the earliest interventional cardiologists doing angioplasties. He smoked in the halls right outside of the lab. He would smoke in the lab except for the oxygen. He would insist that I bring Cuban cigars from Europe.

I worked with an oncologist in grad school who would hand his business cards out to smokers on the street. My dad right now has COPD, heart failure and some kind of cancer (we'll find out the details next week). Spent his entire life smoking. Folks it isn't worth it.
