Not casting a vote, or casting a third-party vote in the US system, doesn’t happen in some sort of magic vacuum like you imply. Voting isn’t an individual action, it’s a social contract.

Yup. In a two party system, unfortunately, withholding support from one candidate by not voting for him or voting third party lends support to the other candidate. It’s how Trump got elected in 2016.

Personally I'd argue that suppression of voters through the gutting of the Voting Rights Act and through GOP gerrymandering & voter suppression, and the illegal & unethical actions of the campaign, are bigger factors, but yes, the people you describe are certainly also a factor.

In Michigan, Trump won by only 13K votes. There were many times that number of voters who either didn't cast a vote for President (they did vote for other offices) or voted third party, more than enough to have made a difference. Most couldn't bring themselves to vote for Hillary
