I feel like a Senator should be able to have a substantive argument about government above the level of dictionary definitions and Civics 101 terms.

The GOP has known for too long they would not be able to obtain or hold on to power if we were a democracy.

I actually don't disagree with the Senator on this one. Living in a democracy would mean submitting to the tyranny of the 51%. E.g. if 51% of the people in a state voted to ban abortion, it would be banned. The point of a republican form of government is to restrain the majority.
-
Of course, the colloquial use of democracy and republic have changed significantly over the years, but the senator isn't wrong- any restraint of the majority is by definition not democratic.

Is this a new refrain? I get it, the right is demographically doomed, just hadn't seen this paraded as a strategy before.

Our republic takes the form of a representative democracy. When an elected representative votes on a law, he/she is representing the collective votes of his/her constituents. The mandate to govern comes from those votes. So we do vote on everything via our representatives.
