Mark Hoofnagle added,
I used to agree heartily with you, but then I had a state senator whom I loathed, a far right wing nutjob who evolved into an antivaxxer and 5G conspiracy theorist, and I was so glad that he was term limited in 2018 and couldn't run again for his seat. So now I'm torn on this.
Ppl who voted for a nutcase will vote for another nutcase. Ending gerrymandering & introducing instant run-off voting for primary & general elections wd make them more competitive & thus less likely that a seat would be held by the same for as long, without eliminating experience
I agree. The problem is the antidemocratic kluge of gerrymandering, campaign cash/citizens united, the filibuster, and lifelong *nondemocratic* appts like judges.
Non-democratic appointment of judges isn't the problem; they shouldn't be politicians. The courts are in the partisan political arena & filled by a party v party process. Nominations ought to made by a rigorously non-partisan body & judges should be required to retire at 70.
Agree with nonpolitical just not lifelong. The world has moved past a lot of these old bigots.
A mandatory retirement age is a good compromise between lifelong & fixed term appointments. The latter increases the risk of rulings being influenced by careerism.
I like the idea of fixed term appointments, staggered so that each President gets two picks, one every two years, is not a bad idea, but think that the idea being floated of 18 year terms is not. Eighteen years is two long. They should be 12 years at the longest.
Too long.
