I wrote this nearly five years ago and just reread it today. Damn. This was one of my best posts ever. So I’m Tweeting it.https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/worshiping-at-the-altar-of-the-cult-of-the-brave-maverick-doctor/ …

I see no reason for modesty here, either.😏

Nice read. I had DeVita in my library as well. Isn't the FDA is starting to evolve its approach wrt narrowly focused approvals? Things like checkpoint inhibitors are more broadly approved -- yes? Chemo vs immunotherapy, maybe?

Finally the FDA is approving targeted drugs based on the driving mutation rather than the cancer type. It's about time!

Fascinating ! I am a pediatric hemato-oncologist, but I had no idea that this was how chemotherapy started ! This story also is important when thinking about the weird popularity of the Maverick doctor from Marseille.

I am old enough to remember DaVita arguing that oncologist's need to be brave enough to give full doses to their Hodgkin's disease patients and chiding us for not doing so. I also have fond memories of Gianni Bonadonna, one of the pioneers in Breast Cancer chemotherapy
