Here’s a question for anyone who has served as a peer reviewer for a medical journal. Did you routinely check a submitted paper’s references to see if those references said what the submitted paper’s authors said they did?

There needs to be a "sometimes." I do it sometimes; sometimes I don't. It largely depends on how much time I have or how much the statements backed up by the references get my skeptical antennae a'twitchin'.
