The fringe right has a major influence on the national GOP. The Revolutionary Communist Part has zero influence on the Democratic Party.

Yep. As an example, I like to point out that right wing antivaxxers, such as
@RandPaul and many state legislators in@OhioGOP, are mainstream in@GOP, while left wing antivaxxers like@RobertKennedyJr have very close to no sway among@TheDemocrats.1 reply 5 retweets 24 likes -

Well, that's also part of the problem.
@TheDemocrats politicians aren't afraid of criticizing fellow Democrats who are antivaccine, while@GOP politicians seem cowed and afraid of criticizing the antivaccine and antiscience cranks in their ranks.0 replies 0 retweets 6 likes -

Indeed. I was a pretty loyal Republican from college until the 1990s, when the increasing anti-science and anti-intellectual bent of
@GOP, along with its increasing xenophobia, pushed me away. The process took a decade and wasn't really complete until around 2003.2 replies 0 retweets 1 like -

Little did I know, even 17 years ago, how bad

Basically, the increasing radicalization of
@GOP led to "reasonable" Republicans like@MittRomney and John McCain to be forced to pander to their fringe and abandon their commitment to reason. The same has been true of most previously reasonable pro-science Republicans.1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes
The other thing that was different in 2008 and 2012. I wasn't afraid of the prospect of a President John McCain or a President Mitt Romney. Sure I would have opposed most of their policies, but I wouldn't have viewed them as threats to our democracy and constitutional government.
