Welp. On @FaceTheNation it looks like @ScottGottliebMD is now on board with the “don’t worry, be happy” messaging about an emergency use authorization for a #COVID19 vaccine before the election. 1/Disappointing.

Basically, he’s saying he thinks trust the professionals at
@US_FDA who would become reviewing an EUA won’t let the administration push them around and force turn to approve a vaccine they’re not comfortable s as approving. 2/3 replies 4 retweets 27 likesShow this thread -
Unfortunately,
@FDACommissioner@SteveFDA has ALREADY shown he can be pushed by@realDonaldTrump, as evidenced by previous EUAs for#Hydroxycholoroquine and convalescent plasma. 3/1 reply 9 retweets 37 likesShow this thread -
With my 15+ year history combating antivaccine disinformation and suffering for it as a result, I’ll put my provaccine bona fides up against those of anyone, including
@DrPaulOffit,@DrPanMD, or@PeterHotez. 4/3 replies 7 retweets 57 likesShow this thread -
That being said, I will almost certainly not be able to trust a vaccine approved by EUA by
@realDonaldTrump’s@US_FDA before the election. I’ll need to see the data on efficacy and safety, and I’d much prefer a formal FDA approval. 5/56 replies 17 retweets 78 likesShow this thread -
@gorskon not saying these FDA calls were right, but weren’t stakes lower for HCQ (already an approved drug) and conv plasma (not high risk) vs a novel vaccine? Is it feasible FDA wouldn’t cross that line?1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes -
Feasible, but given its history with EUAs I no longer trust the FDA to do the right thing, given the enormous political pressure Trump is bringing to bear. He's basically staking his reelection on getting a
#COVID19 vaccine authorized before the election.https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/trump-vaccine-election/2020/09/05/c0da86d6-edf5-11ea-99a1-71343d03bc29_story.html …2 replies 9 retweets 19 likes -
This has put the pharmas in such a weird positionhttps://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-09-04/vaccine-makers-plan-public-stance-to-counter-pressure-on-fda?sref=leQ3i2ya …

It makes good business sense, actually. If the FDA issues an EUA for one vaccine, it could, in essence, shut down the RCTs on all the others, because ethically you can't use a placebo in an RCT if an effective vaccine exists; you can only compare your vaccine to the existing one.
