No, Kareem Carr had a thread going into it looking at videos of interviews where he describes what he's doing. He basically describes trolling for lulz, or "performance art" which just happens to always target women, POC, LGBTQ designed to create anger and poison the convo.

But that is the whole point, to make woke a pejorative. To laugh at empathy. Make being good a joke. It's all in Anglins playbook.https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2017/12/the-making-of-an-american-nazi/544119/ …

Yes, but they're able to make it into a pejorative, because we're so ready to believe it. The cliche of the strident college students calling sandwiches racist, the hipster dilettante OWS protester, those have been cliches my whole life. Now racists lean into them as a strategy.

My point is how to change the whole dynamic? How to make it so smart people don't do shit like support the Iraq War because to them the opposition is tainted by ridiculous callow hippie cliches? Because it keeps happening. Idiot hucksters like James would get nowhere otherwise.

Smart people are perfectly capable of being manipulated by disinfo. The only way to stop it, and the climate scientists have shown it, is to attack the tactics of disinfo so people see and learn how it spreads. Critical thinking. Denialisms tactics. Emphasize consensus.

This is why I point out his tactics. People tend to believe others - like when he says he’s not racist - but look at what he does. Just like antivaxxers deny they’re antivax or climate deniers deny they don’t believe in AGW. Accept they lie to your face. What do they *do*.

Once you get people to see the dysynchrony between the stated intentions and the tactics they become savvy that they’re being lied to. People are very resistent to this. They want to believe others are honest because they are honest. Grifters take advantage of the good in us.

You want to teach people to avoid being a mark? To avoid getting caught in a pigeon-drop? Teach them the tactics. Because the liars are just so convincing when they lie to your face. You gotta teach people to be on alert when people play your emotions, what are they up to?

What do they want you to do? Do they want you to believe something too good to be true? Are they trying to get an emotional response from you? Lever your greed? Pride? Or your desire to help? You beat grifters by learning from magicians and carnival barkers - manipulators.

Scientists are always the *last* to figure this out and easily manipulated themselves. They refuse to acknowledge they can be manipulated just as easily. All critical thinking stems first from humility about your limitations, then learning the tactics that save you from bias.

Jacques Benveniste and his homeopathy experiments are a great example of this phenomenon. It took a magician, James Randi, and a fraud expert to point out how Benveniste’s work claiming to support homeopathy didn’t add up. Scientists failed to do it.

I would say the most helpful tactic, and it comes from those teaching to avoid grifts like P&T, is pay attention to yourself and what you are feeling. People who are trying to trick you make you feel strong feelings. Rather than letting that make you act, have it make you pause.

Penn, at least, has publicly changed his mind about a lot. He also has inhuman levels of self-confidence. He’s made a career out of telling people what he believes and why they’re stupid if they think otherwise. Not sure how to reconcile those.
