I’ve noticed that, whenever I criticize acupuncture as the quackery based on prescientific mysticism and theatrical placebo that it is, inevitably some who claim to “hate woo” will express *considerable* displeasure.

How does placebo effect by proxy work? As I said, there was no improvement at all, which only cemented in my mind that acupuncture is bogus.

You don't even need the 'by proxy' really. Truth is a large proportion of illnesses & injuries resolve without much intervention - or as an old prof of mine used say "by liberal application of time". You only need to be the last woo applied to get the credit.
