I’ve noticed that, whenever I criticize acupuncture as the quackery based on prescientific mysticism and theatrical placebo that it is, inevitably some who claim to “hate woo” will express *considerable* displeasure.

I still remember being annoyed at an episode of M*A*S*H, in which Major Winchester threw out his back, and nothing could relieve hod’s pain until Col. Potter brought in three traditional Asian medicine practitioners whom Winchester has previously correctly dismissed as quacks.

At the end, the acupuncture worked, completely relieving Winchester’s pain, leading him to apologize for having always referred to them as “Larry, Moe, and curly” and start addressing them as “Doctor.” It was truly nauseating. This episode was from 1980, late in the show’s run.

Replying to @gorskon
I remember that episode and feeling the same disgust as you did.

The episode originally aired when I was a senior in high school, and, because I rarely missed the show then, I’m sure I must have seen it when it first aired. I don’t remember my reaction then. My disgust came when I saw it in reruns after I’d become a physician.
