He's not wrong. I've been saying this for a long time. So many resources were sunk into clinical trials for #Hydroxychloroquine that it sucked the oxygen out of the clinical trial space for trials of other promising #COVID19 therapeutics.https://twitter.com/DrTomFrieden/status/1297707995896446977 …

One reason we don’t know more about whether antibody treatment works, for whom, and how best to use it? Lots of trials of hydroxychloroquine showing, repeatedly, that it isn’t useful to treat Covid.

It wasn't just #Hydroxychloroquine. @US_FDA's massive expanded access program for #ConvalescentPlasma pretty much guaranteed that no clinical trials would accrue enough patients to determine if plasma works. Why should they when they could get the plasma without being on trial?

So all our plasma stuff - I was told it wasn’t a trial, but our research teams coordinated it - went through Mayo. All our consents for plasma and the protocol was from Mayo. So, I assume we should be asking them for data? The BS I suspect most is all the damn vitamins? C, Zinc.

The Trump experience has shown how vulnerable medical systems and institutions are, to political influence and meddling. The FDA and the CDC need to be protected from the whims of the Executive branch of government, to preserve our democracy and the ethical practice of medicine.

Indeed. The apolitical nature of @CDCgov, @US_FDA, @NSF, @NIH, etc. is just that, more a tradition than due to hard law. Unfortunately, the laws designed to ensure that these science organizations remain apolitical are weak and, as @realDonaldTrump has shown, easily subverted.

But the patron saint of the GOP Milton Friedman wanted no regulations on anything that can be traded in a free market economy, even health care and the practice thereof. Just let the market decide what works. If people die or become I'll or more ill then so be it.

You point is true. There are a few RCT of CP going on, in the US and elsewhere. Some trials are puny, but there are a few larger ones. Whether they are being accrued to or not, I don't know.... or when they will be completed.http://Clinicaltrials.gov

And expanding the demand for a human blood product that can't easily be mass-produced is foolish. Unless, like RhoGAM and the various immunoglobluins for tetanus, rabies and snakebites you have no other options and lots of research.
