I had someone send me a quote as proof of some nonsense or other - I had to Google it, it was from Game of Thrones. I had to ask him if he knew Game of Thrones wasn't real - he said it didn't matter.
At least George R.R. Martin has generally been pretty explicit in describing the historical events that inspired Game of Thrones...
All rather eye rolling. I actually wrote an extended essay for an Eng Lit exam when I was 15 (so waaay back in the 70s) discussing where JRRT might have 'borrowed' cultural elements of Middle Earth from. Wish I'd made a copy now.
I might excuse someone thinking this of Conan because Howard did set his Barbarian's tales in a fictional lost and distant past, but Tolkien? Sheesh.
