No. It was not. This bit of disinformation being spread by Dr. Dyer is based on a mistranslation (or, if you're feeling VERY generous, and incredibly loose translation) of the German word "behandler."https://twitter.com/BrandonADyer/status/1293569648466698240 …

#MedTwitter we are doctors or physicians, not providers. “Provider” was a term first used by The Third Reich (Nazis) to devalue Jewish physicians as medical professionals. When someone calls you a provider -- help educate them.

Here's someone who schooled doctors trying to use this mistranslation to make the same incorrect claim.https://twitter.com/Desrobertl/status/1188812741508775936?s=20 …

dt. "behandeln" - engl. to treat (a patient) dt. "Behandlung" - engl. treatment dt. "Behandler" - the person who treats patients the term "provider" would rather be translated as "Dienstleister" (=sb. who offers a service)

Yes, quite freely indeed. There's several equally plausible translations for "Behandler". "treater", "curer", "attender"... all at the very least not WRONG. Also, you'd need throw any remnants of context into the dumpster to get to this absurd nazi analogy.

There are so many degrees of freedom in this translation, it's basically loose.

I agree that words matter, but not in the way @BrandonADyer thinks they do. It's he who is abusing language and repeating a misrepresentation of etymology to whine about being called a "provider." 🙄https://twitter.com/BrandonADyer/status/1293570935392358407?s=20 …

Words matter. The etymology of these words deserve our attention and reflection, lest we forget the historical mistakes -- or worse, repeat them.

100% that's what this is. People who had a prior dislike of the word "provider" bc they find it insulting dug thru some obscure history to try to link the term to anything offensive. They found a very loose association to Nazis with no regard for how offensive this comparison is

Physicians who take issue with being referred to as providers need to check their egos at the door and worry about taking care of their patients. Or leave the profession, since clearly they’re not in it for the right reasons.
