Skipping Phase 3 of clinical trials and rushing out a COVID-19 vaccine is a *terrible* idea. It goes against medical ethics, puts people at greater risk and undermines trust in the vaccine approval system. It causes more problems than it tries to solve. Let me explain. 1/10

I did NOT advocate for skipping Phase 3. That is absolutely inaccurate. I said in my full thread to expand Phase 3 access to people in epidemic hotspots who wants to volunteer with 50/50% randomization. Do not misquote or misinterpret what I said. Also tag

I didn't advocate for skipping phase 3 either - not at all. But Twitter doesn't allow for subtlety

Quoting you: "We don't have to wait months for phase 3 trials of
#COVID19 vaccines to finish. We have safe vaccines already, and millions of people (including me) would take them now if permitted. Just do it." If you aren't advocating skipping phase 3, please hone your messaging1 reply 0 retweets 20 likes -

Yep. As a writer, when people misconstrue what I meant, the first thing I do is to look at what I wrote and ask if it was a failure on my part to communicate well what I meant. Steve sure came across as advocating bypassing phase 3.

It’s bad form for a writer to blame first his readers for misunderstanding him, rather than asking first if he screwed up communicating what he meant.

In essence, giving out millions of doses of a vaccine would render the completion of a concurrent phase 3 trial impossible. Why would anyone enroll and risk getting a placebo when they don’t have to? Why wouldn’t everyone conclude that the vaccine must work?

No matter how much you tell people that we don’t know if the vaccine works, actions speak far louder than words. If you’re giving away millions of doses of a vaccine to anyone who wants it, the message is that it works.
