Skipping Phase 3 of clinical trials and rushing out a COVID-19 vaccine is a *terrible* idea. It goes against medical ethics, puts people at greater risk and undermines trust in the vaccine approval system. It causes more problems than it tries to solve. Let me explain. 1/10

In essence, giving out millions of doses of a vaccine would render the completion of a concurrent phase 3 trial impossible. Why would anyone enroll and risk getting a placebo when they don’t have to? Why wouldn’t everyone conclude that the vaccine must work?

@ZoeMcLaren discussed the folly of bypassing phase 3 in a recent thread. It's worth a look.https://twitter.com/ZoeMcLaren/status/1290003562601185280?s=20 …

My guess is that
@StevenSalzberg1 wrote a hasty tweet and was constrained by 280 characters. He didn't blame readers. However, the tweet was based on his essay published today in Forbes. I don't see any room for doubt about what he is advocating.https://www.forbes.com/sites/stevensalzberg/2020/08/02/start-vaccinating-now/#147f7229cf6e … -
I read it. It’s basically
#RightToTry for a#COVID19 vaccine and, as any clinical trialist knows, would basically make completing the necessary Phase 3 trial impossible. The real world practical effect would be to bypass phase 3 trials. - Show replies
