We don't have to wait months for phase 3 trials of #COVID19 vaccines to finish. We have safe vaccines already, and millions of people (including me) would take them now if permitted. Just do ithttps://www.forbes.com/sites/stevensalzberg/2020/08/02/start-vaccinating-now/ …

I'm saying continue phase 3 - of course - but why not make the vaccine candidates available in parallel, to those who are fully informed and who want them? I think people are misunderstanding what I wrote (or, more likely, they are just reading tweets)

Also, vaccine trials are fundamentally different than treatment trials in one way. Because a population without illness is being treated to prevent disease, the tolerance for adverse events is MUCH less. Phase 1 and 2 studies are NOT enough to conclude adequate safety.

In fact, phase 3 trials aren’t truly enough to detect low frequency serious adverse events that can become numerous when tens or hundreds of millions of doses are administered. That’s why we have postmarketing safety studies and birth possible and active monitoring systems.

Basically, what Steve is proposing is akin to a #RightToTry program for people not suffering from a terminal illness.
