Consensus is a political term. It should not at all be considered in science. Often it is one scientist (often considered a quack by other scientists) who bravely soldiers on to discover new things. All these Neo-scientists now want to win popularity contests.

Consensus is a methodology of reaching or arrivimg at collective agreement. Data integrity in distributed systems uses consensus to validate changes before replication. Cluster failovers use consensus to determine which node or clone gets elected to replace the failed master.

The problem with consensus is the potential for human error, such as widely held bias, to compromise conclusions. Also, its also possible that an inexpert outside perspective may ask old questions in new ways, fresh eyes noticing a new detail, etc.
