Here's an excellent discussion by @StartsWithABang on why the vast majority of us are terrible at "doing our own research" on a scientific question. Expertise matters.https://www.forbes.com/sites/startswithabang/2020/07/30/you-must-not-do-your-own-research-when-it-comes-to-science/#5fe17a4a535e …

It reminds me of a post that I wrote on this issue nearly 13 years ago. A good skeptic starts with the scientific consensus. The problem is, not all scientific consensuses are equally strong, and non experts really can't distinguish between them.https://respectfulinsolence.com/2007/12/27/skepticism-and-the-scientific-consensus/ …

90% of the time, "I did my own research" means "I watched a YouTube video that fit my preconceptions." Maybe >90%.

The problem is scientists are so often wrong and ignore data that does not fit their consensus view. That's not science. Example: Anyone can google images of Mars taken over decades and see the climate change on Mars. Who is not qualified to interpret that?

I am going to push back a little bit here. A diverse and inclusive group can often outperform ‘experts.’ Stewardship is helpful. But people without pedigrees together often converge on the same ideas.

Evidence for that? The literature supports diversity in viewpoints but never for exclusion of content experts.

It's so bad students in college do this and think they dont need professors any more.

There is a plethora of science indicating that the overvaccination (3X since liability was removed in 1986) is harmful. There is an abundance of science on the harmful effects of the toxic ingredients in vaccines and auto-immune response to immune over stimulation. #readaninsert
