Let's say they opened an unlocked gate that opened onto a private neighborhood street and sidewalk. What's the appropriate response from all the homeowners? I know how I would have responded, what would you have done?

Apparently, to all the apologists for this racist couple, walking peacefully along a private walk justifies deadly force.

They were trespassing onto someone's property, the mob refused the home owner's verbal commands to vacate. They were not peaceful.

Does anyone not understand mob psychology?

Imagine a scenario where you fear for your personal safety. You go into your giant mansion and lock the doors, call the police, and keep your firearm handy. What's the likely next step for a crowd on their way to a protest in front of the mayor's house, in your view?

The house could be on fire by the time the police arrives. Mobs are not all that predictable.

Can that not happen if you're on the front lawn threatening peaceful people with a firearm?

It's a lot less likely to happen with a firearm in view. The crowd weren't peaceful, they were trespassing and refused to leave when told to do so.

Nothing calms a tense situation like two gun wielding homeowners indiscriminately pointing their weapons at people with fingers on the triggers, eh? Shown: Their de-escalation technique.pic.twitter.com/qzoUuoDS0M

Yep. "Mob psychology" actually suggests that yelling and pointing guns at a "mob" would be more likely to provoke than prevent violence.

Nope, most people who participate in mob violence are cowards. A show of pausable force is enough to scare most of them away, they'll move on to easier targets.
