"Fatuous, self-important drivel" is an excellent description of "The Letter."

Sure, I don't really care whether you like it or not. I'm pointing out that the idea that it was spearheaded by four white dudes is silly and not the point

That's nice. I disagree. That it was spearheaded by four privileged white dudes is totally peak reactionary liberalism.https://newrepublic.com/article/158346/willful-blindness-reactionary-liberalism …

Who or what are you actually disagreeing with? It wasn't spearheaded by four white dudes, it was spearheaded by
@thomaschattwill . I've read the critique that you shared, I think it does make some interesting points that I have been mulling over. Thanks for sharing.1 reply 0 retweets 6 likes -
I like this response: "Shorter Harper’s letter: We elites deplore the fact that people use the internet to criticize us."https://freethoughtblogs.com/pharyngula/2020/07/08/weaponized-ambiguity/ …

This looks hilarious, I'll check it out. I appreciate the share. I'm sure many more would have signed on, but they clearly wanted recognizable names. I don't see that as a problem. I also don't see their general thesis as fatuous, I see it as necessary, but I'm happy to disagree

I think that the most telling thing about the letter is that no concrete examples of "canceling" are cited. The reason is simple. The vast majority of such incidents cited in such complaints are usually not nearly as unreasonable as they are portrayed.

I don't think that is telling at all. It is a short letter and longer pieces have been written by many with specific examples. One concrete example is "a researcher is fired for circulating a peer-reviewed academic study". They could have cited articles about the specific examples, along with links. They did not. You have not changed my mind.

I’m not trying to change your mind I’m just having a chat. I just think the expectations of the letter are quite different than what could be accomplished. Has to be boilerplate and to the point in order to have such a wide range of voices sign on

Which waters it down to make it basically pablum.
