It's really easy to be for "free speech" with no fear of consequences until you actually look at what that means in practice. I used to be about as close to a free speech absolutist as there was, but my thoughts on the issue have been slowly evolving.

I don't think that is telling at all. It is a short letter and longer pieces have been written by many with specific examples. One concrete example is "a researcher is fired for circulating a peer-reviewed academic study". The letter clearly alluded to some specific examples, including the David Shor firing which is virtually impossible to defend.
