By way of perspective, "London Calling" was released as long ago from today as Glenn Miller's "Tuxedo Junction" had been released from 1980, the year "London Calling" was released in the US.
Well, folk music was really big in the early 1960s and remained popular into the latter half of the decade, even after rock had basically surpassed it and co-opted it as folk rock.

Indeed. My mum liked the folkier stuff, rather than the 'noise' of electric instrumentation. Rather oddly, when my dad hit his mid-life crisis in the early 70s he became a fan of 'confessional' female singer-songwriters. Recall him collecting all Dory Previn's albums.
