One of my favorite albums of all time. It's hard to believe it's 40 years old.https://twitter.com/ThatEricAlper/status/1280841752065314823 …

By way of perspective, "London Calling" was released as long ago from today as Glenn Miller's "Tuxedo Junction" had been released from 1980, the year "London Calling" was released in the US.

So, those of you who are around my age (late 50s) who bemoan the kids of today not appreciating The Clash, ask yourself: Did you listen to big band music when you were their age? It's roughly the same time difference?

I did! Everything from Glenn Miller through The Beatles. And now my 15-yo son is educating me on songs from the 60s and 70s I missed.

True, but sometimes we do find forgotten gems, like Paul Pena's "New Train", recorded the year before I was born. Just heard it yesterday for the first time. https://youtu.be/kGx3UotBPjA

I knew Louis Jordan's hits, but mainly because his stuff had funny lyrics. Wasn't a fan of big bands generally, as I associated such music w my grandparents' (not parents!) generation... which I guess bears out your point.

Yeah, my mom raised me on Simon & Garfunkel and Bob Dylan when I was a little kid in the 1960s.

Of course I did. I listened to The Clash, big band music, jazz, blues, rock, classical, baroque, Mo-town, heck, I will even admit to listening to Mahler and Brahms, along with Genesis and 10CCs and Holly Near and Supertramp and... I did not listen to Disco. Ever.

I did, but my parents were in their 30s when I was born, and my dad loved music. We listened to everything. So did he. He died 25 years ago, almost, and had recently discovered BB King and Muddy Waters before his death.

I loved the debut. "Give 'em Enough Rope" was good, but produced too much like metal albums of the day. "London Calling" is when The Clash's genius reached full flower.

Iron maiden debut album was 1980. Equivalent today of something released in 1940. Crazy huh.
