Back when I was a resident, 24 hours would have been considered a short on call shift. And we’d go months world a day off.

There was that, too. Still, I did my general surgery residency in the 1990s, and I'm not exaggerating that I usually spent more than 100 hrs/wk in the hospital.

I still remember one week during my fourth year. I was the senior on Transplant, and, because of a shortage of residents, I not only had to be on call 24/7 for Transplant but also had to take q3d call for general surgery. That week I got maybe 4 hours of sleep over 5 days. Maybe.
