There was that, too. Still, I did my general surgery residency in the 1990s, and I'm not exaggerating that I usually spent more than 100 hrs/wk in the hospital.

Just because something is done a certain way doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be improved for the next generation. The canned “when I was a resident” response sounds ridiculous when we all know that sleep deprivation leads to decreased performance. You don’t need an MD to know that.

I think we need to start focusing on “quality” and not “quantity” when it comes to resident education.
